New To Bermuda?

One of the first things you will need to do is organize transport or as the locals would say, get your first “ride”. This will usually be a scooter or motorcycle but before you can transition into the exciting world of two wheel commuting, there are a few things you need to do.

The Transport Control Department (TCD) administers the operation of all motor vehicles on the roads of Bermuda, as well as issuing all Bermuda Driving Licenses. The Department regulates and controls the size, number and quality of vehicles on Bermuda's roads as well as their operation, including an annual exam.

In order to drive a moped, scooter, motorcycle or car on the Island you must have a Bermuda Drivers License as no other licenses are valid on the Island. You must be over 16 years old for a moped up to 50cc and over 18 years old for all other vehicles.

First you need to take a medical examination at a local doctors’ office. The Doctor will give you a signed form which must be presented to TCD at the time you take your electronic interactive traffic code test. You will need to make an appointment for this test (call 292-1271) and you also need to bring a copy of your work permit and your passport. For bike licenses you may then take the practical riding test immediately and once you pass, get your new license ($99.60 for a ten year license) and you are free to drive on Bermuda’s roads.

It may not be as easy as it sounds - many new residents haven’t driven a bike since they were young so you need to be careful when you get on your first ride. Compounding this, Bermuda has over 47,000 vehicles on our approximate 37 miles of roads, our roads are narrow and windy and we drive on the left hand side of the road!

Cycle Care is Bermuda’s only cycle dealership that offers a FREE introductory riding course. We offer instruction and then put you on one of our quality cycles for some real riding experience in a controlled setting. And to make your life even easier we also give all of our participants a care package that includes a helpful handbook produced by TCD, a Bermuda road map, and a fact sheet outlining everything you need to know! If you purchase a cycle after completing the introductory riding course, we will also give you a discount off the purchase of your new bike, and we will organize all of the necessary paperwork for licensing your bike including insurance and TCD testing. To book an appointment, call 295-0003.

So now you know!
Enjoy the freedom that comes with your new ride.”
